Tyrus McGee excels beyond the arc

ISU men’s basketball guard Tyrus McGee made 96 3-pointers during the 2012-13 season for the Cyclones on his way to leading the nation in 3-point percentage with a 46.4 percent mark. McGee began shooting as a kid using milk crates and carried it over to his time at Iowa State at the Sukup Basketball Complex.

Royce White makes a statement with words, actions

Former ISU men’s basketball player Royce White returned to Iowa and made an appearance at the YMCA Capital City League in Des Moines. White talked to the media afterward about his first season in the NBA and the struggle for mental health awareness. I shot highlights (using an iPhone) of the basketball game and put together a short feature to accompany a story on his return.

An ISU student interns at the Super Bowl

ISU student Kevin Hansen earned a big internship when he was awarded Toro’s turf management internship and a weeklong stay at Super Bowl XLVII in February 2013. Hansen spent the week working on the sporting world’s biggest stage in New Orleans and had the chance to work firsthand with turf management legend George Toma, who has worked on the field for every Super Bowl.

Leonard Johnson returns to finish his degree

After going undrafted in the 2012 NFL Draft, former ISU football player Leonard Johnson signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and worked his way into the lineup. Following his rookie season, in which he had three interceptions, Johnson returned to Iowa State to finish his college degree.

Trevor Bayne's successful honeymoon in Newton

While covering the NASCAR Nationwide Series at the Iowa Speedway, I wrote a story about NASCAR driver Trevor Bayne, who had been married earlier in the week and oddly enough found himself in Newton, Iowa, for the DuPont Pioneer 250 and a unique honeymoon. Bayne won the race later that weekend, and this video accompanied a story on his victory.

ISU professor retires after 38 years of teaching

ISU professor Tom Beell has been involved in movies his entire life. From working at a movie theater as a teenager to writing movie reviews and to teaching journalism students for nearly 40 years, Beell has lived through his passion for the film industry. After 38 years at Iowa State, though, the longtime professor retired.
